Please say a prayer for Neil tomorrow. He is going to have to put our lab to sleep. Buck is only 8 years old, but he has had some problems over the past year. He has the best vet in the world, but he has done all he can do. I can only imagine how hard this is going to be for Neil. It hurts me, and I am not going to be the one who has to do it.
We have had 3 dogs since we have been married. We got Neia (yes, she was named after Neil) when we were dating. Actually, she is the reason we started dating again. That would be another post. Her birthday was July 7, and she was 14 years old. My heart breaks everytime I think about her getting so old. Don't think she has calmed down one minute though.
We got Speck, our German Short Hair pointer, the first year we were married. Neil had to put him to sleep a couple of years ago because he had brain damage from being hit by a car. Speck was a WILD one. He was full of energy and just one of a kind. Parker talks about him a lot being in heaven with Papa. The other day Missi was talking with Madeline after her father passed away about people they knew in heaven and Madeline told her Speck was in heaven. Isn't that precious? Speck was loved.
Buck was our baby. He is just the best dog. He is so lovable and just a BIG bundle of love. He stayed at the clinic for the last year or so. He was the "donor" and had so many problems, Neil felt it best for him to be up there with him. He was SPOILED rotten up there. I guess the reason Buck is so special is because Neil named him after me. I just thought that was super sweet. His name is Atch (H) Buck Deal. Growing up, people called me Heidi Buck. As a matter of fact, Bubba and Charles still call me that. It brings a smile.
It just breaks my heart for Neil to have to do this. I begged him to let someone else put Speck to sleep, but he wanted to do it and cried for hours. This is life, but it isn't easy.

Oh Heidi!! I can't imagine what Neil must be going through. We had to put one of our golden retreivers to sleep, Hunter, a week after my grandmother died. He was 11 years old. I don't see how Neil does it! We'll be thinking about ya'll, but at least he will be runnin' around with Speck in Heaven and looking down on you! :)
I'm so sorry that you have to put Buck to sleep. Ashton and Madeline
I know how you feel. David and I got our bassett hound a month after we got married. He was our child for the longest time. In January (10 years old), my father-in-law found him dead in his favorite "sniffing" spot. I couldn't bear seeing him. Me and the boys were heart-broken. Its like losing a member of the family.
Heidi,
That breaks my heart! I will surely be praying for Neil! Just think how excited Buck and Speck will be though.....running and playing together!
Heidi, this broke my heart! I was never a big animal person until I married Tracy and we had Matthew. Now we have Riley and I love that little wild thing. Thanks for sharing such a personal story with all of us. You all are in my thoughts!
So sorry to hear about this, Heidi. I'm going in to bed to "snuggle" with my sweet Molly...our rat terrier. I have almost just as hard a time hearing about pet loss as any other family members. Saying a prayer for you all tonight!
